What is DLT and why is it required?
TRAI introduced DLT to cut spam and fraud SMS. Instead of each operator keeping its own lists, every registered business, sender ID, template and customer consent is recorded on a shared ledger. When a message is sent, the operator checks it against the ledger and blocks it if anything doesn't match.
For a business this means two things: you can't send commercial SMS without registering, and every message must match an approved template exactly, apart from the variable parts.

DLT registration step by step
- 1
Register as a Principal Entity
Sign up on any operator's DLT portal with your PAN, GST or business registration and a letter of authorisation. You receive a PE ID (Entity ID).
- 2
Register headers
Register each sender ID: 6 letters for transactional and service messages, 6 digits for promotional ones.
- 3
Register content templates
Submit every message you will send, marking variable parts as {#var#}, under the right category.
- 4
Register consent templates
For service-explicit messages, record how customers gave consent.
- 5
Link to your provider
Add your SMS provider as a telemarketer on the portal and share your PE ID, headers and template IDs.
Template categories
| Category | Example | Header | DND numbers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transactional | OTP for banking transactions | 6 letters | Delivered |
| Service implicit | Order shipped, payment received | 6 letters | Delivered |
| Service explicit | Messages sent with recorded consent | 6 letters | Delivered with consent |
| Promotional | Offers, sales, new launches | 6 digits | Not delivered |
Why DLT templates get rejected
- The brand or entity name in the message doesn't match the registered entity
- Promotional content submitted as a transactional or service template
- Too many variables, or variables covering the whole message
- Shortened or unregistered URLs inside the template
- Header doesn't suit the category (letters vs digits)
- Spelling or spacing differs from what is actually sent later
How we help
During onboarding we check your entity details, suggest headers, and review templates before you submit them, so they match what your systems will send. Once approved, we map template IDs in your account so messages are scrubbed and delivered without manual work.

DLT Registration FAQs
Is DLT registration mandatory?+
Yes. Any business sending commercial SMS in India — transactional, service or promotional — must register its entity, headers and templates on DLT.
How long does DLT registration take?+
Entity registration usually takes a few working days once documents are complete. Headers and templates are often approved within one to two days, depending on the operator.
Do I need to register on every operator's portal?+
No. Registering on one operator's DLT portal is enough; the ledger is shared across operators.
What is a PE ID?+
The Principal Entity ID is the unique ID your business receives after DLT entity registration. It is sent with every SMS.
Is DLT needed for WhatsApp or RCS?+
No. DLT applies to SMS and commercial voice calls. WhatsApp templates are approved by Meta, and RCS agents are verified separately.
