Overview

What is bulk SMS?

Bulk SMS is the practice of sending a large number of text messages from a business to its customers in one go, usually through an SMS gateway rather than a personal phone. Instead of typing messages one at a time, a business uploads a contact list or connects its software to an API, and the gateway hands the messages to mobile operators for delivery.

SMS remains the most universal digital channel in India. It works on every phone — smartphones and feature phones alike — needs no app, no data connection and no opt-in to an app platform. That is why banks, government services, hospitals, e-commerce companies and schools still rely on it for anything that must reach the customer: one-time passwords, payment alerts, appointment reminders, delivery updates and offers.

A bulk SMS service provider like PromoMarketingSolution sits between your business and the telecom operators. We maintain the operator connections, handle DLT scrubbing, choose the right route for each message type, retry failures and report back delivery status so you know exactly which messages reached a handset.

Types of bulk SMS in India

Since TRAI's Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR), every commercial SMS in India falls into a category. The category decides which route the message uses, when it can be sent and whether customers on the Do Not Disturb (DND) registry receive it. Picking the right category is the single biggest factor in whether your messages land.

What businesses use bulk SMS for

Most of our customers use more than one type of SMS. A typical e-commerce brand sends OTPs at login, service messages for every order, and promotional blasts around sale events — each on its own template and route.

Priority transactional routes

OTP & login verification

Deliver one-time passwords for sign-up, login and payment confirmation on priority transactional routes, with voice and WhatsApp as fallbacks.

Transaction alerts

Debit and credit alerts, payment receipts, EMI reminders and account updates for banks, NBFCs, insurers and fintech apps.

Order & delivery updates

Order confirmed, shipped, out for delivery and delivered notifications that cut 'where is my order' support calls.

Appointment reminders

Reduce no-shows for clinics, diagnostic labs, salons and service centres with reminders a day and an hour before.

Promotional campaigns

Festive sales, new arrivals, coupon codes and loyalty offers sent to opted-in audiences during permitted hours.

Internal & employee alerts

Shift changes, payroll notifications and emergency broadcasts to field staff who may not have a smartphone.

DLT registration and compliance

Every business that sends commercial SMS in India must be registered on a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform run by one of the telecom operators. DLT is TRAI's mechanism for stopping spam: operators check every message against the sender's registered entity, header and template before delivering it. A message that doesn't match a registered template is blocked at the operator — no matter which SMS provider sends it.

We help every new customer through DLT registration as part of onboarding. Here is what has to be in place before your first message goes out:

Entity, header & templates

  1. 1

    Principal entity registration

Register your business on any operator's DLT portal with your PAN, GST or incorporation documents and a letter of authorisation. Approval usually takes a few working days.

  2. 2

    Header (sender ID) registration

Register the 6-character sender ID customers will see, such as PROMOS, for transactional and service messages. Promotional messages use a numeric header.

  3. 3

    Content template registration

Register every message format with fixed text and variable placeholders. Any URL, APK link or call-back number inside a template must also be whitelisted.

  4. 4

    Consent templates (where needed)

For service-explicit messages, register the consent template and keep a record of customer consent.

  5. 5

    Link to PromoMarketingSolution

Add us as your telemarketer on the DLT portal and share your entity ID, header and template IDs — we map them in the panel so every message is scrubbed correctly.

Bulk SMS platform features

You can run campaigns from the web panel without writing code, or integrate the API into your app, CRM or core banking system. Both share the same delivery engine and reports.

Bulk SMS platform capabilities: integration, security and live campaign tracking

Live delivery reports

Status for every message

REST API & SMPP

Send single or batch messages from any language with a simple HTTP API, or connect over SMPP for high-throughput systems.

Web panel campaigns

Upload Excel or CSV lists, personalise with merge fields, schedule sends and reuse saved templates.

Real-time delivery reports

See submitted, delivered, failed and pending status per message, with failure reasons and webhooks to push status into your systems.

Unicode & regional languages

Send in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and other Indian languages using Unicode templates.

Smart routing & retries

Messages go to the best-performing operator route for their category, with automatic retries on temporary failures.

Short links & click tracking

Shorten whitelisted URLs and see which recipients clicked, so you can measure campaigns, not just deliveries.

How sending bulk SMS works

  1. 1

Create an account and finish DLT

Sign up, complete KYC and share your DLT entity, header and template IDs. Our team checks your templates before you go live.

  2. 2

    Choose panel or API

Marketing teams usually start in the panel; product teams generate API keys and test in the sandbox.

  3. 3

    Send

Pick the template, fill the variables, choose your audience and send now or schedule. The API returns a message ID for every SMS.

  4. 4

    Track and optimise

Watch delivery and click reports in real time, export them, or receive them by webhook. Use the data to clean lists and tune send times.

SMS length, encoding and credits

A single SMS holds 160 characters in standard GSM encoding. If your message contains any Unicode character — Hindi text, an emoji or certain special symbols — the limit drops to 70 characters. Longer messages are split into parts and reassembled on the phone; each part is billed as one SMS, and the per-part limit falls to 153 (GSM) or 67 (Unicode) characters because some space is used to stitch the parts together.

In practice: keep OTP and alert templates under 160 GSM characters, avoid accidental Unicode characters such as curly quotes pasted from a word processor, and preview the character count in the panel before you send a large campaign.

Bulk SMS pricing

Bulk SMS is billed per SMS part delivered to the operator, and the rate per SMS falls as your monthly volume rises. Transactional and promotional routes are priced differently, and there is no setup fee on standard plans. DLT registration fees, where they apply, are charged by the operator's DLT platform, not by us.

Our pricing page shows indicative starting rates for each channel. For high or predictable volumes, ask our team for a custom quote based on your actual traffic mix.

How to choose a bulk SMS provider in India

Almost every provider quotes a low per-SMS price. What separates them is what happens to the messages after you press send. Before you sign up anywhere, ask these questions:

  • Are transactional and OTP messages sent on direct operator routes, or passed through several resellers?
  • Do you get per-message delivery reports with failure reasons, or only a 'sent' count?
  • Will the provider help with DLT registration and template approval, or leave you to the operator portal?
  • Is there an API with webhooks, sandbox access and clear documentation?
  • Can the same account also send WhatsApp, RCS and voice, so you can add fallbacks without a second vendor?
  • Is support reachable during a live campaign, not just by ticket?

FAQ

Bulk SMS FAQs

What is a bulk SMS service provider?+

A bulk SMS service provider is a company that connects businesses to mobile operators so they can send large volumes of SMS through a web panel or API. The provider manages operator routes, DLT scrubbing, retries and delivery reports.

Is DLT registration mandatory for bulk SMS in India?+

Yes. Every business sending commercial SMS in India must register its entity, sender IDs (headers) and message templates on a TRAI-mandated DLT platform. Messages that don't match a registered template are blocked by the operator.

What is the difference between transactional and promotional SMS?+

Transactional and service SMS carry information the customer needs — OTPs, alerts, order updates — and can be sent 24×7 to all numbers, including DND. Promotional SMS carry marketing offers, can only be sent between 9 AM and 9 PM, and are not delivered to numbers on the DND registry.

Can I send bulk SMS in Hindi and other Indian languages?+

Yes. Register a Unicode template on DLT and send in any Indian language. Note that a Unicode SMS holds 70 characters per part instead of 160.

How fast are bulk SMS delivered?+

Transactional and OTP messages on priority routes are typically delivered within seconds. Actual delivery time depends on the operator, the recipient's network coverage and whether the handset is switched on; our reports show the exact delivery time for each message.

Do you provide a bulk SMS API?+

Yes. We provide a REST API for sending single and batch SMS, with webhooks for delivery reports, plus SMPP for high-throughput integrations.

How is bulk SMS priced?+

Bulk SMS is billed per SMS part, with lower rates at higher monthly volumes. Transactional and promotional routes have different rates. See our pricing page for starting rates or ask for a custom quote.
