Overview

What is RCS Business Messaging?

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services, the successor to SMS defined by the GSMA. On Android phones it powers chat features in Google Messages, the default messaging app on most Android devices sold in India. RCS Business Messaging (RBM) is the version for brands: it lets a business send messages that look and behave like a modern chat app, but arrive in the same inbox as SMS.

An RCS business message carries your brand name, logo and a verified badge, and can include high-resolution images, video, rich cards, swipeable carousels, suggested replies and action buttons such as 'Buy now', 'Call us', 'View location' or 'Add to calendar'. Recipients don't need to install anything or opt in to a third-party app.

Because RCS only works where the handset and network support it, every RCS campaign we send has automatic SMS fallback. Customers who can receive RCS get the rich version; everyone else gets a plain SMS, so no one is missed.

RCS message features

Verified sender

Your brand name, logo, colour and verified badge appear on every message, which helps customers trust it and reduces spoofing.

Rich cards

Combine an image or video, title, description and up to several buttons in one card.

Carousels

Let customers swipe through several products, offers or options in a single message.

Suggested replies & actions

Tap-to-reply chips and buttons that open a link, dial a number, show a map or add an event to the calendar.

Read receipts & analytics

See delivered, read and clicked events per message — more than SMS can tell you.

Automatic SMS fallback

Messages to phones without RCS are sent as SMS using your DLT-registered templates, from the same API call.

How RCS messages are delivered

  1. 1

    You send one request

From our panel or API, send the rich message along with its SMS fallback text.

  2. 2

    We check RCS capability

The platform checks whether the recipient's phone and network can receive RCS.

  3. 3

    Rich or plain delivery

Capable phones receive the RCS message in Google Messages; others receive the SMS version.

  4. 4

    Events come back

Delivered, read, clicked and reply events are reported in the dashboard and by webhook.

Setting up your RCS agent

Every brand sends RCS through an 'agent' — your verified sender profile. Google and operators verify the brand before the agent can message customers at scale, which is what makes RCS hard to spoof.

  1. 1

    Brand details

Share your brand name, logo, banner image, colour, description, website, support phone and email.

  2. 2

    Use case and sample messages

Describe what you'll send — promotional, transactional or both — and provide sample messages.

  3. 3

    Verification

We submit the agent for brand verification and launch approval. You confirm ownership through a contact at your company.

  4. 4

    Test and launch

Test on internal devices, then go live with campaigns and API traffic.

RCS pricing

RCS is billed per message, with different rates for basic text messages and rich messages, and for promotional and transactional traffic. Messages that fall back to SMS are billed at SMS rates. Rates fall with volume — see our pricing page or ask for a quote.

RCS best practices

  • Lead with one strong image and a clear call-to-action button rather than a wall of text
  • Keep carousels short — three to five cards is usually enough
  • Write fallback SMS text that still makes sense on its own and fits your DLT template
  • Use suggested replies to make it easy for customers to respond
  • Measure read and click rates against your SMS baseline to prove the uplift
  • Respect timing rules for promotional traffic and offer a clear opt-out

FAQ

RCS Business Messaging FAQs

What is RCS Business Messaging?+

RCS Business Messaging lets brands send rich, verified messages — with logo, images, carousels and buttons — to the default messaging app on supported Android phones, with no app download required.

Does RCS work on iPhone in India?+

Support for RCS business messages on iPhone depends on Apple, the iOS version and the operator. Any recipient who can't receive the RCS message automatically gets the SMS fallback, so your message still arrives.

What happens if a phone doesn't support RCS?+

The message is automatically sent as an SMS using your fallback text and DLT-registered template. You don't need to make a second API call.

Do I need DLT registration for RCS?+

RCS agents are verified separately through Google and operators, but because fallback messages are SMS, you still need DLT-registered headers and templates for the fallback.

Is RCS better than SMS?+

For marketing and engagement, RCS usually performs better because it supports images, buttons, verified branding and read receipts. SMS still has universal reach, which is why RCS is sent with SMS fallback.

How long does RCS agent verification take?+

It depends on how quickly your brand details and verification contact are confirmed. We prepare the submission with you to avoid rejections.
