Overview

What is the WhatsApp Business API?

The WhatsApp Business API — now called the WhatsApp Business Platform by Meta — is the version of WhatsApp built for medium and large businesses. Unlike the free WhatsApp Business app, which runs on one phone and is operated by hand, the API has no phone attached. It connects WhatsApp to your software, so you can send messages automatically from your CRM, store or app, let many agents reply from one number, and plug in chatbots.

Businesses don't connect to the API directly in most cases. They work with a provider such as PromoMarketingSolution, who handles account setup, template approval, hosting and the tools — inbox, campaign manager, chatbot builder and API — on top of Meta's platform.

With hundreds of millions of WhatsApp users in India, it has become the channel customers expect for order updates, support and even purchases. Messages are rich (images, documents, buttons, product lists), two-way and carry your verified business name and logo.

What you can do with the WhatsApp Business API

Notifications & alerts

Order confirmations, shipping updates, payment receipts, policy documents and appointment reminders with rich media and buttons.

Customer support

Give customers a WhatsApp number for support. Bots answer common questions and hand off to agents in a shared inbox.

Marketing campaigns

Send offers, launches and abandoned-cart reminders to opted-in customers with images, coupons and click-to-buy buttons.

Conversational commerce

Share product catalogues, let customers build a cart in chat and send payment links — all without leaving WhatsApp.

Lead generation

Run click-to-WhatsApp ads on Facebook and Instagram and qualify leads automatically with a chatbot.

Authentication

Send OTPs with one-tap autofill and copy-code buttons as a primary channel or SMS fallback.

Message types and the 24-hour window

WhatsApp separates messages a business starts from conversations a customer starts. Understanding this is the key to both compliance and cost.

When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Inside that window you can reply freely with any text or media — no template needed. Outside the window, or to start a conversation, you must use a pre-approved message template. Templates are reviewed by Meta and fall into three categories:

Template categoryUsed forExample
UtilityUpdates on an existing order, account or transactionYour order #4821 has shipped. Track it here.

Multiple agents reply from one WhatsApp number, with assignment, tags, internal notes and conversation history.

Upload audiences, personalise templates, schedule broadcasts and track sent, delivered, read and clicked rates.

REST API & webhooks

Trigger messages from your app, CRM or e-commerce store and receive incoming messages and statuses by webhook.

Catalogues & payments

Show products in chat, accept carts and share payment links for conversational checkout.

Analytics

Track delivery, read rates, response times and campaign conversions, and export reports.

How to get WhatsApp Business API access

Setup is mostly paperwork that we guide you through. Once your Meta Business account is in order, most businesses are live quickly.

  1. 1

    Meta Business account

Create or use your existing Meta Business account (Business Manager). Verifying your business with Meta raises your messaging limits.

  2. 2

    Phone number

Choose a number that can receive an SMS or call for verification and is not currently registered on the WhatsApp app (or migrate it).

  3. 3

    Display name and profile

Set the business name customers will see, plus logo, description, address and website. Meta reviews the display name.

  4. 4

    Template approval

Submit your first utility, authentication and marketing templates. We help you write them so they pass review.

  5. 5

    Go live

Start in the inbox and campaign manager, or connect your systems through the API.

Messaging limits and quality rating

Meta limits how many unique customers a new number can message in business-initiated conversations each day. Limits rise automatically as you send good-quality messages to more customers and complete business verification.

Every number also has a quality rating based on how customers react — blocks, reports and low engagement lower it. To keep it high: only message people who opted in, keep templates relevant and personalised, don't over-send, and give customers an easy way to opt out.

Getting the green tick (verified badge)

The verified badge — Meta now uses a blue tick through Meta Verified for Business — shows customers your account is authentic. It is granted to notable, well-known brands and requires a verified Meta Business account, two-factor authentication and evidence such as press coverage. We can help you prepare an application, but approval is at Meta's discretion. Even without it, your display name and profile appear on every message once approved.

WhatsApp Business API pricing

WhatsApp pricing has two parts. Since 1 July 2025 Meta charges per delivered template message, by category and the recipient's country — marketing costs the most and authentication and utility much less. Replies inside the 24-hour customer service window are priced separately under Meta's current rate card. On top of that, providers charge a platform fee for the inbox, chatbot, API and support.

We pass Meta's rates through transparently and show our platform fee separately, so you know exactly what you pay for. See our pricing page or ask for a quote based on your expected volume.

WhatsApp marketing best practices

  • Collect clear opt-in on your website, checkout, ads or at the store before sending marketing templates
  • Use utility templates for transactional updates — don't disguise promotions as updates
  • Personalise with the customer's name, order details and relevant products
  • Use rich media and buttons; they lift engagement over plain text
  • Send at sensible times and cap frequency to protect your quality rating
  • Always offer an easy way to stop messages, and honour it immediately

FAQ

WhatsApp Business API FAQs

What is the WhatsApp Business API?+

The WhatsApp Business API (WhatsApp Business Platform) lets medium and large businesses connect WhatsApp to their software so they can send automated notifications, run marketing campaigns, use chatbots and let many agents handle conversations from one number.

Is your WhatsApp Business API official?+

Yes. We provide access to the official WhatsApp Business Platform from Meta, not an unofficial workaround, so your number stays compliant and is not at risk of being banned for using unofficial tools.

Can I use my existing WhatsApp number for the API?+

Yes, but a number can only be active on either the WhatsApp app or the API at one time. You can migrate an existing number to the API; the chat history on the phone is not carried over.

Can I send bulk messages on WhatsApp?+

Yes, to customers who have opted in, using Meta-approved templates. Your daily limit on business-initiated conversations starts small and increases as you send quality messages and verify your business.

How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in India?+

You pay Meta's per-message charges, which depend on the template category (marketing, utility or authentication), plus a platform fee for the tools. See our pricing page or ask us for a quote.

How do I get the green tick on WhatsApp?+

Verification is granted by Meta to notable brands with a verified Meta Business account. We can help you prepare the application, but approval is at Meta's discretion.

Do I need coding skills to use the WhatsApp API?+

No. You can use our inbox, campaign manager and chatbot builder without code. Developers can use the REST API to automate messages from their own systems.
